Bioshock Could See Upwards Of Five Sequels, Story Willing [The Saga Continues] - 01/07/2009 06:20 PM

While wary of "cashing in" on the franchise, Global President of 2K Christoph Hartmann suggests that Bioshock could follow the Star Wars saga, generating sequels as long as the story holds out.

Now of course he isn't guaranteeing five more Bioshock games, but Hartmann says that if the innovation is there and the storyline is strong, they would keep telling the Bioshock story until it's done.

“For Bioshock, because it’s so story driven, the question obviously arises: how long can you do it without turning into The Matrix? The first Matrix was great, the second one was weird and the third one, you thought: ‘Who [making this] is on crack and who isn’t?’. “But, then again, look at Star Wars. It’s a fight between good and evil, just like Bioshock. If we spin it the right way and get the right twist of innovation, we can make six parts of it, as Star Wars did.

Hell, if they can keep things fresh and new through five sequels, more of my money to them. Hartmann did go on to say that they would never force out a new Bioshock game just to have a new BioShock game, citing the example of an unnamed racing title.

“But we have to be careful not to cash in. I won’t name the company, but there was a great racing game years ago. They brought it back year-on-year. If you look at the scores, it’s hard to believe what they’ve done to it. It’s upsetting, actually.”

Could this be a thinly-veiled dig at EA's Need for Speed franchise?

Mad Catz' Hits CES With Street Fighter, HAWX Controllers [Ces09] - 01/07/2009 06:00 PM

Mad Catz is unveiling their new controllers for Street Fighter IV, a HAWX compatible flight stick and their latest PC flight stick at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.

The Saitek Aviator Flight Stick comes in an Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 model, but both are fully PC compatible. The controllers include an oversized flat base for increased stability, three dedicated Fire Buttons, a Combat Trigger, POV (point-of-view) Analog Stick and a throttle lever. The controllers also include a two position mode switch.

The 360 version includes an integrated Live headset connector and an Xbox Guide button, while the PS3 version includes a Home button.

Mad Catz says the sticks are fully compatible with Ubisoft's upcoming flight sim Tom Clancy’s: HAWX. The sticks, which ship later this month, will sell for $50.

The Street Fighter IV Arcade FightStick for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 includes dual-speed Turbo functionality for each of the eight buttons complete with LED Indicators, and an integrated D-Pad switch. The start and select/back Buttons have been moved to the rear of the stick, which also includes a top panel that can hold character cards which show each character's special moves.

The Street Fighter IV FightPad for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 includes an enlarged circular eight-way floating D-Pad and arcade style six-button configuration. An integrated D-Pad switch allows gamers to alternate between D-Pad and Analog Sticks.

The Street Fighter IV Arcade FightStick: Tournament Edition for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 uses the same Japanese style ball-handled joystick and 30mm Action Buttons found in the official Street Fighter IV Vewlix arcade cabinet. The stick also has the D-Pad control switch, dual Turbo functionality for each button, and exact button layout matching the Vewlix Street Fighter IV arcade panel.

The Street Fighter IV Faceplate and Console Skinz for the Xbox 360and Playstation 3 lets gamers customize their consoles.

The Street Fighter IV Wall Scroll us basically a giant sticker you slap on your wall.

The Cyborg X Flight Stick is a PC flight stick with a trigger, eleven programmable buttons, a shift function to double the program options, two levers and a scroll wheel.

The X also uses some components which can be removed or folded away to make it easier to store the controller. The stick's handle attaches to the base with a secure screw collar and the left and right feet of the tripod base fold in and out of the body. When extended, the legs click into place to create a secure and stable platform for the stick.

The stick, set to hit in the first quarter, will sell for $50.

Am I the only one more than a little disturbed that Mad Catz still isn't telling us officially how much their Street Fighter gear is going to sell for?

Sure, we've heard that the gamepad may sell for $40, the stick for $70 and the collector's edition for $140, but why no mention in their press releases?

Champions Online Cares Where Your Force Beams Come From [Pew Pew Pew] - 01/07/2009 05:40 PM

In the latest edition of their Champions Online Q&A feature, developer Cryptic details how powers in their upcoming superhero MMORPG can be tweaked by players for a more customized hero.

A big issue for me in City of Heroes, which was also developed by Cryptic, was the fact that I had a superhero with a cool-ass visor shooting beams from his hands. Every comic book fan knows cool-ass visor equals eyebeams. Champions Online looks to fix this flaw by allowing players to place their beams wherever they'd like.

The current plan is for players to be able to choose emanation points, hues, and alternate effects for some powers. For example, if a player chooses a force beam, they can elect to have it originate from their character’s eyes or as a chest beam instead of coming from the hands. The color, or more specifically the hue, of the force beam can also be set by the player. For powers that don’t have such obvious effects, such as Martial Arts, the sweep of color that trails behind the move is what would change.

For the non comic-book savvy this might seem like a piddling thing to worry about, but trust me - it's a huge difference. You cannot have The Green Glove shooting plasma out of his nipples. I mean, you could, but that would be just a bit disgusting...yet intriguing at the same time.

Square Brings Disgaea 3 To Europe In February [Dood] - 01/07/2009 05:20 PM

For the Disgaea fans to cheap to import or too unversed on the English language to read this article, Square Enix is delivering Disgaea 3 to European PlayStation 3 owners next month.

Squeenix plans on liberally distributing the latest Nppon Ichi prinnyfest, Disgaea 3, throughout PAL territories come February 20th. The latest game in the series of course makes the jump to the PlayStation 3, without any of that pesky updating the game for the current generation of consoles stuff. That just complicates things.

John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “With Disgaea 3, Nippon Ichi have created a wonderful world full of bizarre characters and deep, addictive gameplay. I hope everyone enjoys playing this unique and rewarding title.”

Well of course you do, Mr. Yamamoto! If everyone enjoyed playing Diagaea 3, it would be a financial windfall!

Of course it will probably only attract the few die hard fans that haven't already imported it, but we can dream.

DISGAEA 3: Absence of Justice AVAILABLE ACROSS EUROPE IN FEBRUARY

London (7th January 2009) – Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces that Nippon Ichi Software’s Disgaea®3: Absence of Justice will be released by Square Enix across PAL territories on 20th February 2009 exclusively on the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system.

Welcome to the twisted world of the Nether Institute, Evil Academy where good is bad and bad is good. In this school a good student is somebody that excels in delinquent activities such as skipping classes or not doing their homework, whereas a bad student arrives to school early and does their homework on time.

This is the setting for Disgaea 3, a rich and deep Strategic RPG that’s not afraid to display a very bizarre sense of humour. It’s a winning combination that will leave you laughing one minute and fighting cunning enemies the next. Where special attacks can deliver up to 100 million points worth of damage and the power of the PS3 is used to deliver 2D sprites, albeit lots of them!

John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “With Disgaea 3, Nippon Ichi have created a wonderful world full of bizarre characters and deep, addictive gameplay. I hope everyone enjoys playing this unique and rewarding title.”

About DISGAEA 3: Absence of Justice

Story

Mao was reading a comic book. His room was filled with jars of specimens from past experiments. The pages told of a superhero that defeated an atrocious Overlord. Right then, Mao made a huge decision. “As of now… I shall become a hero!”

The decision he made was a big deal, for he is the spawn of the Dean of the Nether Institute Evil Academy. Mao believes that to defeat the Overlord, he must become a hero.

Raspberyl, the delinquent of the school, learns about Mao’s plans and begins to worry. If Mao were to achieve the title of Hero, it would endanger her position as the school’s “Number One Delinquent”. She tries to talk Mao out of his plan.

Witnessing their conversation, Almaz, a hero, misunderstands the situation and tries to save the day. Mao accepts Almaz’s challenge and steals Almaz’s hero title after defeating him.

With the title of Hero, Mao believes he is one step closer to defeating his father and achieving his goal of becoming Overlord.

Will Mao be able to become a hero and defeat the Overlord?
Or will Raspberyl convince him not to?
What is going to happen to Almaz?

MySims Line Expands With Inevitable Kart Racing And Party Games [Game Announce] - 01/07/2009 04:40 PM

EA begins to slowly work the MySims brand into the ground with the addition of two all-new and completely predictable games for the Wii and DS - MySims Party and MySims Racing.

Yes, the adorable little MySims are ripe for exploitation, so here comes a mini-game compilation and a kart racer! MySims Party features more than 50 mini games that you can put your MySim through, though there is a bit of a twist. Rather than have all players control generic characters, each MySim in the game has different stats, so picking the right one for the job is half the battle.

Then there's MySims Racing, which pits MySim against MySim in intense multiplayer races for up to four players. Customize your car and take it to the track, each one filled with power-ups to help you get the jump on the competition.

Both games are due out this year for the Nintendo Wii, with a slightly slimmed-down version the DS at the same time. Both also take a beloved, time-honored brand and turn it into your average piece of borderline shovelware.

You and your friends have the chance to Stick the Trick in the extreme snowboarding mini game, outrun a robot in Robo Assault or shake your groovey thing with DJ Candy during the Go Go Dancing challenge. Each MySim character brings a unique combination of skills to the mission, with differing levels of endurance, speed and luck giving you the option to choose the best MySim for the task. Take the mini games with you! MySims Party for the Nintendo DS offers 40 mini games to choose from. These games, specific for the DS, offer hours of entertainment. You can dig up dinosaur fossils during Excavate-a-Saurus, join Goth Boy on a first person shooter mission during Haunted Hunted or rock out with Air-Guitar-Star!

MySims Racing for the Wii

There are nearly endless customization options so that your car reflects your high-gear personality. You can swap bodies, change paint jobs and add tons of accessories. Not only can you change the look of your car, you can also improve power, acceleration and handling by mixing and matching engines, suspension and tires.

Skate Early With The Skate 2 Demo [Skate Or Die] - 01/07/2009 04:20 PM

Skateboarding fans eager to experience the second game in EA's Skate series will find satisfaction in the coming week, as the company announces a Skate 2 demo for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The Skate 2 demo features both single player modes as well as two of the game's online party play modes - Thrasher's Hall of Meat and Spot Battle. The Hall of Meat is a challenge to see who can hurt themselves the most, and Spot Battle is where players...do battle...on spots. Probably not. Either way, there'll be plenty to do.

The Skate 2 demo will be hitting Xbox Live tomorrow, January 8th, while the PlayStation 3 version is taking up the rear on the 15th. Or you could just wait until the 21st and buy the whole thing. I'm not going to tell you how to live your life. A skater has to make their own way.

Get on Board Early With the Skate 2 Demo on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Black Box, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced today that the Skate 2 demo will hit Xbox Live Marketplace on January 8th and the PlayStation Network on January 15, 2009. The demo introduces players to the city of New San Vanelona where they can skate with style and individuality via access to the enhanced character customization tools. Gamers will get a first glimpse of the deep single-player story and exciting challenges in all-new locations. The Skate 2 demo will also feature two of the game’s online Party Play modes: Thrasher’s Hall of Meat and Spot Battle.

Skate 2 ups the ante in delivering all the grit, creativity and culture of skateboarding. Equipped with double the bag of tricks, players are tasked to rebuild their career and revive the skate scene. Now with the ability to get off-board and move objects, gamers can create their own epic spots and challenges, which can then be uploaded, shared and experienced by others around the world.

Skate 2 hits retailers in North America on January 21st, and worldwide on January 23, 2009 – making it one of the first must-have games of 2009. Skate 2 is developed by Black Box, a studio of Electronic Arts in Vancouver, British Columbia and will be available on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. The game is rated “T” for Teen by the ESRB and is rated 16+ by PEGI.

In Defence Of Prince Of Persia [Prince Of Persia] - 01/07/2009 02:30 PM

Ah, Prince of Persia. You either love it for what it tried, or hate it for what it tried. We love it, though, and Tom Cross at GSW does a good job of explaining why.

Mostly because he takes everything the haters hate and breaks it down, then points out the game's most endearing legacy may not even be its stance on death and difficulty; it may be your easy-on-the-eye sidekick, Elika.

Sure, superficially she's a lot like Ico's Yorda. Clad in white, there to help you overcome otherwise insurmountable platforming obstacles...but there's a relationship there that, while stifled at times by the inappropriate choice of voice actor for the Prince, is still doing well at something most other games won't even attempt.

Gundam Senjou no Kizuna Is PSP Bound [Japan] - 01/07/2009 02:00 PM

Rumor confirmed! Japanese arcade title Gundam Senjou no Kizuna is getting a PSP version — minus the cockpit display complete with 180 degree screen.

Besides the obvious screen differences, the number of players per multi-play team has been halved. Instead of the 8 player vs. 8 player arcade set-up, the PSP version will be 4-on-4. Gundam Senjou no Kizuna for the PSP will be out March 26 in Japan.

Those interested in recreating the arcade experience, be sure to put the PSP screen close to your face. Real close.

British Sales Charts [Sales Charts] - 01/07/2009 01:30 PM

Looks like lots of people in Britain got Wiis for Christmas. And lots of people also got a second controller to go with it. Least, we reckon that's what happened.

After all, Wii Play isn't going to top the charts on the strength of that escalator game, is it? No. No it is not.

Sony Exec Wants More Thrilling Episodic Content [PS3] - 01/07/2009 01:00 PM

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Europe (SCEWSE?) exec Michael Denny is not thrilled with episodic content. He wants it to be more exciting, you know, more cliffhangery.

For me, true episodic gaming needs to be more than just selling a traditional game split into chunks. It needs to be games that are specifically designed from the outset to be very story driven, to be very cliffhanger-orientated. Almost to follow some of the ideas based on some of the best TV series' like Lost or Heroes.

And if Denny and Sony can figure out how to do that on a regular and constant basis, we'd say they'd have a big, episodic hit on their hands.

Wii Fit Sells Three Million In Japan [Nintendo] - 01/07/2009 12:30 PM

Wii Fit was released in Japan in December 2007. Proved to be, despite its liberal use of the word "fit", a hit. So much so that it's now sold three million copies.

Yup. Three. Million. Which is up 200,000 from the last round of numbers we saw (gotta love those Christmas sales!)

Think Iwata & co give two hoots about the science of it all? Nope. They care about counting all that money.

You'd Most Like To Be Alone In The Dark With... [Alone Contest] - 01/07/2009 12:00 PM

Darth Vader. The "Alone With The Darth" boxart has been chosen by Kotakuland as its favorite finalists. Congrats to all who entered and a word about contest hijinx after the jump.

We actually had to go through and ban people for getting off topic while voting. If you'd like to discuss what you think of the contest or the prize, fine, but please do that in the contest reminder posts, not in the voting post. Doing that in the voting just gums everything up and makes counting the votes harder. It's not only common sense, but common courtesy.

Another thing: Towards the end of the voting, we got spammed with a ton of votes by commenters who had never commented before. What's even more iffy is that the commenters names were written in a similar pattern — like this "NameName."

We did not count any votes from first time commenters for any finalists and will not in any future contests.

Much love to all who entered — Vader boxart winner, please send an email to kotakucontestATgmailDOTcom to claim your prize. Be sure to include your address. CONGRATS!

Your English Language Rhythm Heaven Boxart [Rumor] - 01/07/2009 11:00 AM

While Amazon isn't the place to pin your hopes and dreams on for game info, the web retail appears to have revealed the English language Rhythm Heaven boxart.

Game Sales Up 17% In The UK [Retail] - 01/07/2009 10:30 AM

Music sales are down, movie takings are down, consumer spending is down...lucky for British retail, then, that game sales are on the up! In fact, they're so up that it's making everything else look good.

Data released today by Britain's Entertainment Retailers Association show that total entertainment sales - which combine the sales of DVDs, music and games - were up 4% from the same time last year. DVDs were up 1.9%, album sales were down 3.2%, while games, well, games were dragging everyone else's average up, sales 17% higher than in 2007 with a combined 82.8 million titles sold across the UK in 2008.

The leap has been mostly attributed to the Wii, though it'd be interesting to see how the PS3 contributed, since Blu-Ray sales were up 358% from 2007.

House Of The Dead: Overkill Devs Want Arcade Machine Feel [Wii] - 01/07/2009 10:00 AM

Does House of the Dead: Overkill brings arcade shooting to the Nintendo Wii? Yes, says the game's developer Headstrong Games.

According to Lead Designer Alastair Halsby: "We have done our utmost to ensure that it feels like playing an arcade machine — albeit an arcade machine that is out to entertain a paying customer, instead of one that is trying to lever money out of players. Our players have already paid their money, so it's also our job to make sure they have a thrilling ride."

What we've seen from this title appears great so far. And that 1970's pulpy grindhouse look? Love it.

1UP Sold To Hearst Corporation, EGM To Close [Update] [Journalism] - 01/07/2009 09:30 AM

What began as a rumour last month has now escalated into full-blown fact; Ziff Davis have officially sold the 1UP network to competitors Hearst, owners of UGO.com.

Hearst - who more importantly own many of the nation's biggest newspapers along with ownership stakes in ESPN and the History Channel - will however only be taking ownership of the network's online presence.

Which means long-running print magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly won't be along for the ride. This will be the last month the magazine is published, bringing to an end nearly two decades of independent, influential games editorial.

RIP, games magazines. Below is an email sent to Ziff employees by company CEO Jason Young earlier today, courtesy of Gamasutra:

Team:

We are announcing today the sale of our 1UP digital business to UGO Entertainment, a dvision of Hearst Corporation.

Over the course of the last 4 years we have built the 1UP sites into a top tier gaming digital destination. While our growth has been sharp, it has become apparent that more scale is necessary to effectively compete in this market segment.

We made the decision that the best path to putting our award winning 1UP brand and content in a more competitive position was to combine it with the operations of another publisher. We received much interest from other parties.

After a comprehensive process, this morning we completed a deal with Hearst Interactive, the owner and operator of UGO Entertainment. 1UP.com, MyCheats.com, Gamevideos.com, and Gametab.com will now all be part of the UGO Entertainment business. Many of our employees will travel with this business and become part of the UGO team.

With this transaction happening, we have also made the decision to discontinue publication of EGM. The January 2009 issue will be the final issue of the publication. With demand for print continuing to decline amongst both advertisers and readers and the content being produced by 1UP no longer available for use in the publication, it simply did not make sense for us to move forward with this business any longer.

We will continue to operate the Filefront business as a part of the PCMag Digital Network. In the coming months we will determine the best ways to leverage the scale and functionality of this digital property to expand our business position.

The Ziff Davis position in the gaming market has been significant and important to our company and the market itself. While many of our assets in the PCMag Digital Network (including Filefront now) will continue to cover this market, it's important that we celebrate all that we have achieved over the last 25 years.

Our leadership in print for decades with titles like Computer Gaming World and EGM which in turn translated into the build out of one of the leading digital gaming media assets in 1UP are prime examples of the skill, passion, and expertise of our teams.and what they achieved.

It's incredible to compare the 1UP.com of today versus that of 12 months ago. I want to thank everybody in our Game Group for their important contributions over the years.

For Ziff Davis Media, our attention and focus now shifts squarely to the PC Mag Digital Network. The proceeds from this transaction will be used to pay down debt. One of the primary objectives of our business plan is ensuring that we have plenty of room to service our debt obligations into the future, and manage for growth in what will be a challenging year in the advertising market.

While the market will be tough, we are confident our position is well aligned to where the demand is most active. We move forward as a 100% digital business with tenured brand position, and powerful capabilities to drive results for our customers. I look forward to sharing more updates in the coming weeks.

JY.

Interesting how he says "many" of their employees, not "all" of them.

Breaking: Ziff Davis Sells 1UP To UGO/Hearst, Closes EGM [Gamasutra]

UPDATE - This isn't a simple transition. It's a day of long knives. Around 30 of 1UP's staff have been fired today, including the majority of its most well-known and respected writers. Full story here.

Fred Willard's Nintendo Shilling Lets Us Down [Clips] - 01/07/2009 09:00 AM

Nicole Kidman. Liv Tyler. Fred Willard? Nintendo has roped in Spinal Tap actor Fred Willard to promote Personal Trainer: Cooking in this disappointingly disappointing clip.

Be warned, the below clip is blergh. And it's not because it's for some casual cooking game — that's not the problem at all. It's that it's something like seven minutes long. That's not casual! Casual is two minutes long.

(Then again, Crecente's video of this same game is fourteen minutes long — but doesn't feel like it's fourteen minutes long.)

We hate this Willard DS clip so hard. It's not funny. No wait, we love it. Did anyone ever come in and throw a pork chop at your face? Okay, we laughed. Still, this is totally not casual, this is 1am on Adult Swim, and we are confused.

Check out Aussie comedian Hamish Blake's take on the same ad. It's only thirty seconds, chuckle-inducing and edited down to a sharp point like the Willard one should be.

What Do You Do With Your Old Games? [The Greatest Depression] - 01/07/2009 08:00 AM

Hey, we're in a recession! And some of us have old games to unload. What to do, what do do.

As Forbes points out, you can take your games to places like GameStop for store credits, e-Bay for cash, website Goozex for online swaping. There article covers a lot of familiar ground, but does have quotes from CheapAssGamer's CheapyD — and that's always nice.

So! Our question: What do you do with your old games?

Aliens: Colonial Marines Got QTEs, Custom Cover & Flashbacks [Game Over Man] - 01/07/2009 07:30 AM

Details on Gearbox's Aliens shooter are thin. But excitement is thick. So let's address both those issues with this preview for the game, which touches on story, setting and the use of cover.

Originally appearing in PlayStation World UK, this preview - now up on Games Radar - reveals that the game is split into six chapters, and that in each chapter you'll be taking command of a different member of your six-man squad. Each mission, then, you'll be getting flashbacks and back-story on that particular marine, which should flesh out the story and give you plenty of chances to scream NNNOOOOOO when they inevitably start falling to the xenomorph's advances.

The preview also says that you'll be able to use adaptive cover in the game, ordering squadmates and other personnel to do things like weld entrances and move furniture to seal off (or just slow down) the aliens. And when they do get through? It's time for combat. Combat that isn't always a straight-up fight, and instead occasionally becomes a scripted, QTE bug hunt.

Full piece below.

CES 09: We're In Vegas! [Ces09] - 01/07/2009 06:20 AM

Worry not, for we have made it to Las Vegas for the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show safe and sound. We'll be picking up CES press badges and listening to Microsoft's keynote tomorrow, so stay tuned.

For now, simply gaze at the wondrous busts of Messrs. Sigfried and Roy and an unnamed white tiger "friend" while we search for loose slots and tech PR folks already in their cups. We're told that Microsoft may have one trick left up its sleeve and greatly anticipate that Sir Howard Stringer of Sony will say something that will have us scrambling for the most savory headline.

If there's anything you want us to peep and subsequently molest (electronics only!) while at CES, don't be shy. Let us know in the comments.

Europe Still Gets A Free Killzone 2 Demo [PS3] - 01/07/2009 05:30 AM

In the US, you have to pay for a demo of Killzone 2. Crazy days. In Europe, however, it's the demo will be free. Which is good news for Americans!

Yes, Americans. It's not good news for Europeans, because the second you start treating the fact a demo is free as "good news", you're fucked. So...carry on, it's business as usual

No, it's good news for Americans because this is a handy workaround to the "no free demo in the US" thing. Just create a European PSN account (if you don't already have one), and come February, when the demo's due for release, you're good to go.

Fewer Zombies? More Outfits! [Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop] - 01/07/2009 05:00 AM

From images we've seen, Dead Rising for the Wii looks light in the brain-eating zombie department. But that doesn't mean it skimps on other things.

Things like, well, outfits for photographer Frank West to wear. "One surprising thing was feedback from people who liked the ability to change Frank's costume," says Dead Rising Wii producer Minoru Nakai. "So, this time, we've made it so that you can change into more costumes."

Yeah, because changing into costumes is way more important that killing hordes of the walking dead in a zombie game. We're being harsh. Shame on us! Check out the full interview at Gamasutra and read about Nakai building Dead Rising Wii from the ground up and making changes to the game — stuff like speeding up some of the zombies.

Remember, it's not the number of zombies that counts, but the outfits you wear while slaying them.

Mass Firings At 1UP After Sale [Journalism] - 01/07/2009 03:30 AM

Oh boy. Looks like the sale of 1UP to Hearst hasn't gone as smoothly as you'd expect. Rather than simply move house, it seems most of the site's most experienced/popular writers have instead been let go.

Looks like when Ziff CEO said "Many of our employees will travel with this business and become part of the UGO team", he actually meant "we're taking the interns and tea lady and that's about it".

According to twitter posts, GAF posts and phonecalls to MTV, around 30 staffers were let go today, including Skip Pfister, Ryan O'Donnell, Philip Kollar, Jay Fresh, Cesar Quintero, Nick Suttner, Anthony Gallegos, Matt Chandronait, Shane Bettenhausen and former EIC James Mielke.

Also cut were most of the Gamevideos.com team, as well as production of the 1UP Show.

Leaving, what, Sam Kennedy and Garnett Lee? That's a day of long knives if ever we've seen one.

Energizer Reveals Hot Controller On Controller Charging Stations [Ces09] - 01/07/2009 03:00 AM

Battery maker Energizer wants to be more than just your battery maker of choice. It wants a slice of that sweet video game accessories revenue, announcing four controller charging stations in advance of CES '09.

Why simply buy rechargeable AAs when you can enjoy the luxury of dedicated charging stations? Plugging your mini-USB cable into the top of your DualShock 3 is so late 2006! Energizer implores you to buy one of its "Power & Play" charging systems, for your Wii Remote, Xbox 360 controller and PlayStation 3 controller recharging needs.

It even touts a dedicated Wii Fit charging station, but doesn't provide photos. Perhaps the company just wants to get the keywords "Wii Fit" into its press release. Regardless, we'll be hunting down Energizer public relations reps while in Las Vegas to find out just why one would need such a thing.

Want To Buy A Games Mag? Hardcore Gamer Is For Sale (On eBay) [Kotaku Magu] - 01/07/2009 02:30 AM

Now isn't the best time to be buying into the games mag business. Times are tough. But hey, if you're not swayed by this harsh reality, Hardcore Gamer are for sale. And for only $42,000!

And that's not even the best part. No, the best part is that owners Double Jump Books are selling the magazine on eBay. So to get it, you'll have to bid. $42,001 is as good a place as any to start.

Not sure you should bother, though, as crassly, when settling on a sales pitch, Double Jump haven't exactly chosen to extol the virtues of the magazine's contribution to the medium. Instead, they're flogging it off as a swag-n-junket extravaganza.

Want your own video game magazine and have all the big game companies beg you to cover their latest games before they're released? Want to be wined and dined by Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Rockstar, Capcom, and Konami, to name a few? Want to have your editors flown on all expenses paid press junkets to Japan, the UK and all across the US? Want exclusive-access passes to attend closed, industry-only trade shows, like E3 and GDC? Good luck with that if you're starting from scratch. We've already got what takes years to build right
